Former Alabama WR Jameson Williams expected to have massive 2025 season for Lions

A lot of positive buzz is happening for the Detroit Lions and for a good reason.

Dan Campbell, Detroit’s head coach, sees a massive season coming for one of his wide receivers in the fall. Jameson Williams, a former standout at the University of Alabama, enters his fourth year with the Lions. He got selected at No. 12 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft and produced a breakout campaign in 2024 with 58 catches (91 targets) for 1,001 yards receiving and seven touchdowns in 15 games. Williams averaged 17.3 yards per reception, but now the 2021 Southeastern Conference Champion has moved into a leadership role on the team.

Campbell spoke to reporters recently about how he expect Williams to have a marquee season for the Lions.

“He’s got a ton of growth left,” Campbell said about Williams’ next step.

“He has had a good spring, and I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves in OTA, but there is just so much versatility with him. There are so many things we can do just with his routes on the outside. We can do things inside, but just with his speed and he’s gotten so much stronger … When you can run like he runs and then you can stop on a dime, you talk about a hard cover. The sky is the limit for him. He is exactly where we need for him to be at.”

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder looks like he has added weight and muscle since last season.

Williams expressed his mentality entering this season in OTAs.

“Ever since I have been installed into working hard as a kid with my pops, I always had the same mindset,” he said. “Just go out there and be the best, work the hardest, and my dad would always text me to ‘outwork everybody.’ I guess going into year four I have a little more pep in my step. I’m becoming a vet, moving over from the rookie stage, and I’m ready to play more football.”

Williams needed one year of polish at Alabama to send him to the National Football League.

He recorded 79 catches for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021. Williams had one of the best single-season performances in Tide history — finishing fifth all-time for receptions, third all-time for receiving yards, and third all-time for touchdowns. He helped Alabama get to the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where it fell to Georgia.

Hopefully, this becomes a marquee year for Williams.
